Car & Van Rental at Carlow

Some 52 miles from Dublin lies the county town of Carlow, where a magnificent countryside and scenic mountains line the horizon for as far as the eye can see. Carlow offers the perfect environment for someone looking to get away from the bustle of the metropolis. This rural town incorporates a little bit of everything, as the modern attractions intermingle with the laid-back atmosphere. Carlow is so old that it is said to pre-date any Irish history that is in the books. The launching of the Carlow Institute of Technology has contributed to the steady increase in the population of the town, as more school leavers now have a reason to stay. Whether looking to live in or merely visit the town, a hire car from Enterprise in Carlow will help you enjoy your stay.

Attractions in Carlow

The Greek revivalist design of the 1830-built Carlow Courthouse is what makes this building stand out. It has a Russian cannon sitting at its front, which was supposedly captured in the Crimean War. Even though it has undergone several refurbishments over its lifetime, the courthouse is still a sight to behold, because it resembles a temple set on a plinth. Duckett’s Grove is a sprawling mansion that was built in the 1800s in Gothic Revival architecture, and it is currently open to the public. After settling on the car you want to hire in Carlow, you can take a ride to the Graiguecullen Bridge, a five-arched stone structure, which is one of the oldest on the River Barrow. It is situated just beside Carlow Castle, another must-see when in the area. An attempt to redesign the old castle that is on the banks of the River Barrow went badly and left it in ruins, but that in itself is a sight to see. The Mount Leinster Heritage Drive is another spot you can spend time on, as it takes you across 47 miles of road that is lined with quaint little villages and towns, such as Clonegal, Borris, Myshall and Bagenalstown. While on the drive, you can take in the breathtaking views of the Blackstairs Mountains.

Places to Visit Outside Carlow

You can choose to venture into nearby towns, such as Tinryland, Killeshin and Clogrennane. For a golf enthusiast, the town of Killerrig has one of the best golfing courses in the area. Your Carlow car rental can also take you beyond the region and into County Laois, which is doubly landlocked. This means that the county itself is landlocked, as are the counties bordering it. The Slieve Bloom Mountains, Castle Durrow and Roundwood House are a few of the places to see in this region.

Airport Car Hire

There is no public airport in Carlow, so the only option is to fly in from Dublin. Our on-site branch can provide the car hire you need to make your trip to the town a swift one.

Parking and Traffic Information in Carlow

Before the small section of motorway known as the M9 opened in 2008, the town of Carlow had a traffic jam problem on Barrack Street, coming in from Dublin-Waterford. The bypass has reduced the amount of traffic that residents and tourists have to deal with. Some parts of the town have a one-way system, such as the area around the courthouse, Browne Street, Castle Street, Church Street and Charlotte Street. When you know how the road links work, your navigation of the town will be much simpler, and that will allow you to make the most of your hired car. The more than 3,000 parking spaces in this rural town will ensure that you find a safe place for your vehicle.
